Clear Communication of Compensation Plans

Clear, concise, and plain language – this is the mandate as companies prepare the necessary regulatory disclosures regarding executive compensation.   These same tenets apply to internal communication of executive pay plans as well.  Even though executives are a financially sophisticated group, it does not necessarily mean that they understand how their pay programs work.   Fortunately, there are many tools, both high tech and/or high touch that can fill this gap.  The four key steps in communicating pay plans to executives are to understand your audience, craft the message, deliver it in a way that engages your executives, and keep it simple.
